This year’s Languages Awareness Week focused on understanding different cultures, promoting linguistic diversity and how we communicate differently when thinking in another language.
Alongside the School’s usual programme of student-led clubs and societies that celebrate different cultures, each day there were events and activities to engage students with different languages. From exploring French cities, to Chinese calligraphy and playing jianzi, German music sessions, quizzes and workshops, there was an activity for every level of ability and areas of interest.
Mrs Hetherington and Miss Kendall encouraged all students to be part of a special Language Awareness Week artwork, writing “I speak your language” in a language of their choice on a giant poster. Another highlight of the week was a talk by alumna, Maya (2017), who came into School to speak to students about her experience of studying languages at UCL, where she is now doing a Masters in Globalisation and Latin American Development.
“The Latymer community has again proven its enthusiasm for foreign languages and cultures,” said Mr Palmer, Head of Modern Languages at Latymer. “I’ve been really impressed with how our students embraced the week with the activities on offer and discussions in class. Embracing a new language and culture is certainly an essential asset in today’s increasingly global economy.”
Our thanks to the Modern Languages teams for putting together this week’s fantastic timetable of events – including the word of the day!
