33 Latymerians competed at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Enfield for the 2024 Public Schools Championships, from Years 8 to Upper 6th.
Outstanding results came from Meyra (Year 9), Cordelia (Year 10) and Kelvin (Year 11), who all made the last eight (quarter-finals) in their events, and Leander (Year 9), who was seventh in the ‘Master-at-Arms’ category in his age group.
Meyra dominated the Girls’ Mount-Haes Foil, clinching victories in the initial rounds before ultimately finishing 5th after a closely contested quarter-final match against a skilled opponent from City of London Girls.
Cordelia excelled in the Girls’ Junior épée , securing a spot in the quarter-finals despite a tough match against the third seed from Millfield, ultimately placing 8th.
Kelvin showcased remarkable improvement throughout the day in the Boys’ Junior Sabre, in an 8th place finish after battling through several challenging opponents.
Leander’s versatility earned him 7th place overall in the ‘Master at Arms’ category, competing across all three events in his age group.
Three other Latymerians deserve honourable mentions. Josie was 12th in the Girls’ Junior Foil; captain Julia came 10th in the Girls’ Senior épée who demonstrated excellent leadership to the younger, less experienced fencers over the course of the day; Demir finished 14th in the Boys’ Junior Sabre. The championships provided invaluable experience for all participants. Special thanks are extended to coach Zak Wheeler for his unwavering support and dedication to the team.
