Students Explore Munich Christmas Markets

Over the weekend, our group of German language students immersed themselves in the Munich Christmas Markets. For over half of the 20 students it was their first trip to Germany and taste of German culture.

Munich is not only a beautiful city, but also historically important and it comes alive at Christmas.  There are several Christmas markets to visit, spread across the centre of the city. Each market specialises in different gifts, from traditional hand- made wooden toys and gifts to sweets and delicacies.

During the trip, students enjoyed a traditional German meal of Schnitzel with Sauerkraut, Apfelstrudel, and Kaiserschmarrn, while also putting their German into practice by ordering the dishes themselves.

Their itinerary included a visit to the Frauenkirche, Bavaria’s iconic symbol, where they hunted down the elusive ‘devil’s footprint’ on the cathedral floor.

‘There were audible gasps as we turned the corner into the main square and the group saw the imposing Town Hall and the Christmas markets laid out amongst the snow. We visited a number of different markets including a medieval one with birds of prey and street performers, a traditional food market and one with nativity displays and carols. The children bought lots of gifts for family and friends and ate heaps of Bratwurst and waffles.’ – said Head of Year 7 Katie Temple.

Latymer’s foreign language trips and language exchanges, offer opportunities for development of both language skills and cultural enrichment.  It is a fundamental part of Latymer’s policy of inclusion that pupils should not be deprived of the opportunity to take part in trips and events purely on financial grounds. The Trips & Activities Fund (formerly known as the Horizon Fund), funded by the Parents’ Gild and administered by the School, provides grants to pupils who would otherwise be unable to participate.
